A sworn translation grants legal validity to the translated document. The regulation is made by the boards of trade of the states and is carried out only by a Public Translator and Commercial Interpreter, also known simply as a sworn translator. A sworn translation is required for documents in foreign languages in Brazil and documents in Portuguese abroad to have legal validity.
